ECG Workshop for Nurses and Paramedics

On the directions of worthy Principal QAMC Prof. Dr. Javed Iqbal and under the guidance of Director Medical Education and Head of cardiology Department Prof. Dr. Qazi Masroor, initiative of EKG training to all the nurses and paramedics is taken up by the Cardiology Department QAMC/BVH for the very first time. The Principal Professor Dr. Javed Iqbal has urged that our staff nurse must have the skills to read Emergency ECG of the Patients because they are the first responder to the patient in anywhere of the world. So he boost up the Cardiology department to take initiatives for ECG training of Staff Nurses and Paramedics of whole Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur and Civil Hospital, Bahawalpur. For this purpose Dr. Shahdat Hussain in-charge of Cardiology department along with his team took the responsibility of teaching and training of Staff Nurses and Paramedics in Electrocardiography. The department of Cardiology first decided the core topics, which will be covered in Electrocardiography workshop for Nurses and Paramedics. The core topics will cover the following:

  • Basic Coronary Anatomy and Physiology
    • Cardiac Chambers, Valve, major vessels and blood flow
  • Conduction System of the human heart
    • Characteristics of Cardiac cell, ECG waves and intervals and Cardiac pacemaker
  • Lead Morphology and Placement
    • Name, function and placement of 12 leads of ECG
  • Technical aspect of ECG Machines
    • Control and function of ECG machine and troubleshooting of ECG artifact
  • Calculation of Heart rate and basic rhythm strip interpretation
    • Calculation of heart rate, regular and irregular rhythms
  • Cardiac Arrhythmia
    • Tachycardia, Bradycardia, At. Fibrillation, Vent. Tachycardia and Vent. Fibrillation
  • Acute coronary syndrome
    • STEMI, NSTEMI and unstable angina.
  • ECG practice
    • Test for most common Arrhythmia and Myocardial Infarction

In every workshop 25 Nurses and 5 technicians will be trained. At the end workshop, a revision test will be conducted, and all participants will performed and will awarded a certificate of participation and ” EKG Badges” as a symbol of “EKG literate” by the Principal QAMC and Chief Nursing superintendent. Feedback will be taken by the participant to improve the ECG workshop in future
